Drainage, Retaining Walls, and Erosion Control for Central Arkansas Properties
Every property has a water plan. On most of them, nobody made it, so the water did. Dirt Work Innovations builds large-scale drainage, structural retaining walls, and erosion control for homes, farms, and communities, working out of Heber Springs and covering Cleburne, Van Buren, White, and Faulkner County.

Types of Water and Slope Work We Get Called For
Water problems and slope problems are usually the same problem at different speeds. These are the jobs we build most.
Stormwater Retention & Detention Ponds
- Stormwater ponds for large properties and communities
- Built for POA and HOA stormwater needs
- Dams and outlets shaped to manage real storm loads
Swales, Culverts, and Surface Drainage
- Swales cut to carry runoff where it should go
- Culverts sized and set at every crossing
- Flooded and soggy ground drained at the property scale
Retaining Walls for Hillside Lots
- Structural walls for sloped home sites and lake lots
- Grade changes held so the usable ground stays usable
- Walls built for the load of the hill behind them
Erosion Control on Slopes
- Washouts and gullies stopped at the cause
- Slopes shaped and stabilized before they fail
- Bare ground protected while it establishes

Drainage and Erosion Control Across the Whole Property
When runoff washes out a driveway or starts cutting into a hillside, the trouble often begins uphill. We study how water crosses the land and identify where grading, swales, culverts, or stormwater ponds can control it. That matters on lake lots, farms, and POA/HOA properties where one drainage issue can affect roads, structures, and neighboring land.
Give surface water a workable route. Grading and swales help move runoff away from building sites, roads, and vulnerable slopes.
Make crossings work with the drainage. Culverts are placed and sized for the water moving through roads and low areas.
Handle smaller drainage within site prep. French drains and other minor drainage work can be included when we're already handling a larger site preparation project.
How We Plan Drainage, Retaining Walls, and Slope Protection
- 1
Start Where the Water Starts
Fixing water where it ends up treats the symptom. We trace it to where it comes from and solve it along the whole path.
- 2
Sized for the Big Rain
Average rainfall never broke anything. Ponds, swales, and culverts get sized for the storms that actually do the damage.
- 3
The Ground Is the System
Most water problems get solved with shaping and grade before a single pipe goes in, and dirt does not clog.
- 4
Walls Built for the Load
A retaining wall holds back thousands of pounds of wet earth, so the base, the drainage behind it, and the structure get built for that number.

What Water Costs When Nobody Plans for It
Water never hurries and never stops. That is the whole problem.
Standing water works quietly on a foundation.
By the time it shows as a damp slab or a shifted footing, it has been at it for years.
Patch drainage moves the problem.
A ditch here and a pipe there sends water somewhere new, and the new spot sends a new bill.
A slope fails slowly, then suddenly.
A leaning fence line is the early notice, and Central Arkansas storms tend to deliver the final one in a night.

Common Questions We Get About Drainage and Slopes
What property owners ask when water starts winning.
How do I fix standing water on my property?
Start with where the water comes from, because standing water is the end of a story, and the fix lives earlier in it. Depending on the property, the answer is regrading so the ground sheds instead of holds, swales that give runoff a route, culverts where it crosses, or a retention pond that gives a large volume somewhere to go. The soil has a vote too, since the clay common around here holds water long after the rain quits. We walk the property, read the water's path, and quote the fix in a written, itemized estimate.
Do you install french drains?
As part of a full site prep package, yes. As a standalone job, no. Our drainage work is large-scale: retention and detention ponds, swales, culverts, and surface water management across whole properties. When we are already clearing, grading, and building on your site, the small drainage rides along in the same contract. If a single french drain is the whole job, a smaller outfit is honestly the better call for you.
What is the difference between a retention pond and a detention pond?
A retention pond holds water permanently and manages storm inflow on top of its standing pool. A detention pond stays dry most of the time and fills only during storms, releasing the water slowly so it does not flood everything downstream. Which one a property or community needs depends on the land, the volume of runoff, and what sits downhill. We build both across the lakes region, including stormwater ponds for POA and HOA communities.
How much does a retaining wall cost in Arkansas?
The wall you see is a fraction of the price. Height, length, the load of the slope behind it, the base it needs, and the drainage built behind the face all set the number, and the drainage matters most, because water trapped behind a wall is what kills walls. A short garden wall and a structural wall holding a hillside above a lake lot have nothing in common but the name. We look at the slope, then put the real number in writing.
What areas do you serve for drainage and retaining walls?
Home base is Heber Springs, and the working range covers Cleburne, Van Buren, White, and Faulkner County: Greers Ferry, Fairfield Bay, Clinton, Quitman, Searcy, Conway, and the rural land between them. Bentonville and Mountain Home property owners with land in our area, we take those calls too. Not sure if you are in range? Ask, and you will know in one phone call.
